Project Idea: Students study what it means to eat a healthy diet and learn by observation, comparison and reading about the nutritional content of foods. They reflect on what foods are included in their individual diets and make plans to adjust their diet and exercise for maximum healthy benefits.

Driving Question: How can I eat at a fast food restaurant and have a healthy heart?

Content: Reading informational text about nutrition, nutritional labels, company websites or nutrition pamphlets to determine calories, fat, carbohydrates, and protein content in the foods they eat.
Based on research completed students will create a healthy menu.

Standards: Science 4.L.2 Understand food and the benefits of vitamins, minerals and exercise.
Reading – RI.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences
from the text.

Major Products: Individual student food logs and Calories in and Out Chart. List of foods that fuel the body and a weekly menu made up of healthy choices. Students will construct a healthy menu for their favorite fast food restaurant. Students design an exercise plan based on caloric intake.
